‘To Be the Real Oneself’

As a student in China, I often felt lost. This mindset stems from anxiety caused by not knowing which direction to take, like a headless fly, unaware of the root of my problems. Later, I realised that many of my fellow students and friends were in a similar state. They felt swamped every day and craved others’ recognition, but lacked a fundamental goal and, like me, they did not know where the problem lay.

Through my practice-based research during this MA, I have reflected on the influence of family members on my personality, and the importance of intergenerational understanding and cultural change. My research explores the informal education we receive at home, and the influence this has had on shaping my approaches to learning, practicing, and teaching photography.

My photography and video work is structured into three sections. The first expresses how my parents taught me to compare myself to others. The second section presents the story of the psychological change process as I gradually began to understand my parents. The third section tells how I gradually understood the problems in my relationship with them and solved them to reduce internal strife and become independent.
